Parliamentary Secretary Marles meets participants of a literacy class at Buk Bilong Pikinini Library at Koko in the National Capital District, PNG 5 November 2012.

Buk Bilong Pikinini is an independent, not-for-profit organisation that has established nine libraries in PNG in community-based locations near settlements, clinics and market places. There are few functioning libraries outside the school system in PNG and many children do not have access to books. With support from the Australian Government, through AusAID, the Buk Bilong Pikinini libraries provide children with the opportunity to improve their literacy skills and develop a love of reading and learning. Since September, the Koko Markets library has also been running a pilot adult literacy program called 'Buk bilong PapaMama'. Parliamentary Secretary Marles accepted the role of Patron of Buk Bilong Pikinini earlier this year.
